We register veterinary surgeons to practise in the UK, on the basis of their educational qualifications and continued ethical and professional good standing. Those members eligible to practise are categorised as ‘home-practising’.
Some members hold the status of ‘non-practising’, ‘overseas-practising’ or ‘retired’. These members are not legally able to practise here currently.
We also list veterinary nurses and, from 2007, have held a Register of Veterinary Nurses.
Both groups of veterinary nurses are qualified and legally able to practise, but only registered veterinary nurses additionally agree to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses, carry out continuing professional development and be governed by a disciplinary system.
